TEAM 6: FLU GENETICS TRACKER MAP SUMMARIES

Team 6 is tracking the distribution of genetics data as they are submitted and made available.

Methods:

Each map represents the number of swine flu isolates from each region or state that identifies a segment of the H1N1 swine flu genome.  Each swine flu RNA segment has a name (PB2 PB1 PA HA NP NA MP NS).  These swine flu isolates are all the same strain but are not identical.  The excel file lists all of the segments that were coded for that particular isolate in that specific region.  Different regions are showing different isolates of the same swine flu virus.  From Promed mail the initial analysis of the swine isolate segment shows that segments are mainly comprised of swine origin with the exception of the PB1 which may be derived from a human H1N1 virus.  NA and NP seem to relate to Asian and European swine and the rest to North American swine (H1N2 and H3N2 isolated since 1998).
