This brief activity is designed to acquaint you with the operation of the computers in the Geography lab.
Before you begin, it will be helpful to review the information in Introduction to Computers and Operating Systems, particularly the section entitled PC - Windows.
Startup
If you need to turn on and log in to a computer:
Move the mouse to see if the computer is already on - the screen may simply be blank due to a screen saver or energy saving feature.
If the computer is off:
Turn on the computer
When prompted, bring up the login window:
While holding down the Control and Alt keys, press the Delete key
Enter the following:
User Name: <your CSUF student login>
Clearing out the Temporary Working Directory
Before setting up your files, you should clear all existing files from the work directory: c:\temp.
Double-click on the Deltemp icon that should be located on the computer
desktop
Creating a Temporary Working Directory (you may need to do this on your home computer)
Copying Project Files to Your Workspace
All project files are stored under Geog481 in the Data directory on the Geogsrv server. This directory should always be mounted as a visible drive (E:, F:, etc.) on your local machine. To copy files for Proj0:
Right click on the Start button
All the files in the Proj0 directory should be highlighted
From the menu, select Copy
All the files from Proj0 under Data\Geog481 on Geogsrv should now be copied into C:\temp
Click the X in the upper right to close File Explorer
Starting ArcMap and Loading a Map Document
Click the Start button, then ArcGIS, then ArcMap 10.6.1 to launch ArcMap (or any of the ways shown in class)
Open a blank map
The default view for Proj0 should appear on the screen
Saving your work and exiting ArcMap
Make a few changes to the map. For example, click on the check marks next to the layer names to turn layers on and off. When you are ready to save your work:
From the menu, select File - Save
If the program prompts you to again save your work, press YES
Copying Files from C:\Temp to a Backup Device
Your work still needs to be copied from c:\temp to another storage location or it will be permanently deleted by the next user.
Attach your device or cloud location
Safely remove your USB device or log out of your cloud
Signing Out or Shutting Down the Computer
Normally, you will not need to shut down the computer, however, you should sign out before leaving:

Make sure your Go Print account is registered:
Show me your login and make sure I check you off on my list.
