Geography 481 Intro to GIS
Project Zero: Windows and The Geography Lab

This brief activity is designed to acquaint you with the operation of the computers in the Geography lab.

Before you begin, it will be helpful to review the information in Introduction to Computers and Operating Systems, particularly the section entitled PC - Windows.

Startup

If you need to turn on and log in to a computer:

• Move the mouse to see if the computer is already on - the screen may simply be blank due to a screen saver or energy saving feature.

• Check the monitor power button to see if the monitor is on
  
• Check the computer power button to see if the green light is on

If the computer is off:

• Turn on the computer
  

• Turn on the monitor

When prompted, bring up the login window:

• While holding down the Control and Alt keys, press the Delete key

Enter the following:

• User Name: <your CSUF student login>
  

• Password: <your password>
  
• The domain should automatically be ACAD, the student domain.

Clearing out the Temporary Working Directory

Before setting up your files, you should clear all existing files from the work directory: c:\temp.

• Double-click on the Deltemp icon that should be located on the computer desktop
  

• If prompted, enter the letter "y"

Creating a Temporary Working Directory (you may need to do this on your home computer)

• If you do not have a c:\temp directory on your local computer hard drive, create a "new folder" using the Windows File Explorer
  
• If you already have a c:\temp directory on your local computer, you will minimize confusion if you remove any files that are already there.

Copying Project Files to Your Workspace

All project files are stored under Geog481 in the Data directory on the Geogsrv server. This directory should always be mounted as a visible drive (E:, F:, etc.) on your local machine. To copy files for Proj0:

• Right click on the Start button
  

• Select File Explorer
• Click the arrow next to This PC to expand the directory structure if necessary
  
• Arrow down the left hand frame until you see a directory named Data (\\ Geogsrv)
  
• Click on Data, then on Geog481-Carroll, then on Proj0
  
• From the menu, click - Select All

All the files in the Proj0 directory should be highlighted

• From the menu, select Copy
  

• Arrow up the left hand frame until you see the C:\temp directory (you may have to expand the C:\ directory)
  
• Double click on temp
  
• From the menu select Paste

All the files from Proj0 under Data\Geog481 on Geogsrv should now be copied into C:\temp

• Click the X in the upper right to close File Explorer

Starting ArcMap and Loading a Map Document

• Click the Start button, then ArcGIS, then ArcMap 10.6.1 to launch ArcMap (or any of the ways shown in class)

• Open a blank map

• From the menu, select File - Open
  
• If necessary, navigate to C:\temp
  
• Double-click on the file Proj0.mxd

The default view for Proj0 should appear on the screen

Saving your work and exiting ArcMap

Make a few changes to the map. For example, click on the check marks next to the layer names to turn layers on and off. When you are ready to save your work:

• From the menu, select File - Save
  

• From the menu, select File - Exit

If the program prompts you to again save your work, press YES

Copying Files from C:\Temp to a Backup Device

Your work still needs to be copied from c:\temp to another storage location or it will be permanently deleted by the next user.

• Attach your device or cloud location
  

• Open File Explorer
  
• Navigate to C:\temp
  
• Select all files, and edit-copy edit-paste them to an appropriate folder (directory) on storage device or cloud
  
• Close File Explorer

Safely remove your USB device or log out of your cloud

Signing Out or Shutting Down the Computer

Normally, you will not need to shut down the computer, however, you should sign out before leaving:

• Left-click on the Start button
• Click the user icon
  
• Select Sign out

ONE LAST ITEM

Make sure your Go Print account is registered:

• Click on the Show Icons symbol (see graphic)
• Then click the Go Print icon.  It looks like a red crescent
• Login using your campus credentials.

Show me your login and make sure I check you off on my list.
