Research Interests: Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and East Asia, the Middle East, environmental history and political ecology, political geography, Remote Sensing, geographic thought, geographic education, information and communication systems, geography of music. My dissertation research was on land use and environmental change associated with the US military bases in Okinawa, Japan, and I am continuing research related to this topic and to Okinawan studies in general. Other recent research has focused on the continuing conflict in the Middle East and renewable energy use in Japan.
