Keynote Presentation - Ghosts of Summers Past: How that “Dead End” College Job Might Lead You to Your Future - Dr. Dydia DeLyser, California State University, Fullerton
Abstract:
As an undergraduate student CSUF Geography professor DeLyser took an interesting but “dead-end” summer job. Her presentation details that work, and how it went on to shape DeLyser’s life and career, including her PhD dissertation and subsequent career, as well as long-term community service. She shows how even the least desirable aspects of that job continue to resonate in her life today as important lessons about work and life, and how what may seem just a “dead end” can actually lead to a vibrant future.
Biography:
Dydia DeLyser is professor of Geography in the Department of Geography & the Environment. A cultural-historical geographer, her research asks how the past is made meaningful in the present. Her work finds place in California—from cities like Los Angeles and San Diego to ghost towns like Bodie. A licensed pilot, her research has carried her to the skies as well. Committed to community-engaged scholarship, DeLyser serves as President of the Bodie Foundation, Secretary of the Museum of Neon Art, and as a member of the Board of the Heritage Flight Museum.

Special Opportunities for Community College Students!
We extend a special invitation for prospective transfer students to take part in a tour of the Department of Geography & the Environment after the conclusion of the symposium - see details below. In addition, community college students can participate in the symposium in two ways. First, geography faculty at Southern California community colleges are invited to select up to 3 students from their institutions to present an academic poster at All Points of the Compass. This is an excellent opportunity for outstanding students to present their research in a friendly, supportive setting. Second, community college students are eligible to participate in the "Compass Cartography Competition" competition described above. Please contact Dr. Zia Salim (zsalim@fullerton.edu) for more information about any of these 3 opportunities.
Department Tour
